    A memoir

    Excerpt

"I put on white gloves to protect the artifact from any oils or dirt from my hands, I slowly

removed the battered text, examining its fragile spine. I couldn’t help but to notice the withered,

    hardback covering and loose pages.

The tattered text was coming apart from years and years of use. Carefully, I opened the

Bible to see scriptures written in the very old version of the King James Bible. I perused its pages

and read the text, hoping to unearth some secret of the past. As I flipped through the Bible light

bond pages, an envelope fell, slipping onto the floor.

Carefully I picked it up. It was a small envelope addressed to my great-grandmother, Mrs.

Mable Hunly, 901 Catcave, Jonesboro, Arkensas, sent from Poplar Bluff, Missouri on December

12 th of 1921 at 7 PM. It had a 2 cent U.S. postage stamp on it. I was struck still and stared at the

date, 1921. The envelope was slit opened on the side, and as I slowly pulled out a letter, there

was also a loose sheet of paper that fell out. The letter was from her mother, Cynthia Culp.

The paper was very thin, discolored and fragile. I must have felt the presence of my

great, great. great-grandmother all around me because tears swelled up in my eyes as I cautiously unfolded

    the letter to read it.

My great great great grandmother could read and write! Her letter traveled over 100 years and 5 generations, landed in my lap 3 months after I received my doctoral degree.
