Dr. Sanethia Thomas serves as an Assistant Instructional Teaching Professor at the University of Florida. She earned her Ph.D. in Computer & Information Science & Engineering with a focus on Human-Centered Computing, accompanied by a certificate in Athlete Development, also from the University of Florida. Dr. Thomas is a National Science Foundation Fellow and a GEM Fellow. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Information Technology from the University of Texas at El Paso and a Master’s of Science in Youth Development Leadership from Clemson University.
As a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellow and a GEM fellow, she has made significant academic contributions and was inducted into the Edward Bouchet Honors Society at Yale University, as well as being a founding member of the Beta Eta Sigma Honor Society at the University of Florida. Her interdisciplinary research spans human-computer interaction (HCI), athlete development, artificial intelligence (AI), natural language processing (NLP), and global technology development. At the University of Florida, Dr. Thomas teaches core computing courses and leads a global internship study abroad program focused on software engineering and user design, for which she was honored as the International Educator of the Year for 2024. Additionally, she received the AI Educator of the Year award for the 2023-2024 academic year.
Dr. Thomas represented the United States in basketball competitions held in Amsterdam, Belgium, and Paris. Her athletic background has inspired her research on developing technologies designed to support athletes in acquiring transitional skills and enhancing mental health. She is at the forefront of research in Athlete Development Technology (ADT), exploring how technology can aid athletes in their overall development and wellness.
Her research has been published in numerous journals, conferences, and magazines, earning her accolades from organizations such as the National Center for Women & Information Technology, and the National Academy of Inventors.
As a first-generation graduate and the third African American woman to earn a degree in her field from the University of Florida, Dr. Thomas is pioneering research in computer science and athlete development. She embodies a powerful message about the importance of education and success, transcending gender and racial barriers.
With a history of over ten years of industry experience across both public and private sectors, Dr. Thomas brings a wealth of knowledge and practical insights to academia.
